ENA Foundation Honors Two Nurses for Their Commitment, Generosity

June 21, 2023 Awards Emergency Nurses Association ENA Foundation

Award recognizes philanthropic work to fund education and research

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (June 21, 2023) – The ENA Foundation has recognized Howard “Bill” Miller, BSN, RN, PHRN, NRENTP, and Diane M. Schertz, BS, RN, FAEN, with its Keystone Award, celebrating their years of dedication to the philanthropic arm of ENA. Both individuals are active supporters of the Foundation, not only on a personal level, but also in the ways they give their time and talents to increase the engagement of others.

The ENA Foundation awards grants and scholarships to ENA members so they may pursue research and further their education.

“This year’s recipients have been active at the national level, however, more importantly, they have been active at their local state levels helping to promote the ENA Foundation,” said ENA Foundation Chair Mike Hastings, MSN, RN, CEN. “I thank them for their long-lasting commitment.”

Miller, of Yardley, Pennsylvania, was an ENA Foundation board trustee from 2016 to 2019, during which he served on its fundraising and scholarship committees. As a member of the New Jersey ENA State Council’s Executive Board, he pushed to make contributions to the Foundation part of the state’s annual budget and works with both individual members and state councils to find ways to raise money for the Foundation.

Miller’s generosity extends beyond the ENA Foundation. He often identifies a local charity in the towns where ENA events are held so fellow members can bring donations, such as coats for kids, toiletries for veterans and shoes for homeless people.

Schertz, of Rancho Cordova, has been the California ENA State Council fundraising chair since 2010 and is also the current chair of the Sacramento ENA Chapter. A Fellow in the Academy of Emergency Nursing, she encourages her Academy colleagues to keep ENA at the top of their giving list.

Schertz is a strong and creative advocate for ENA who likes to inject a bit of fun and friendly competition into fundraising. She is well known for purchasing unique items for auctions and raffles at various ENA events around California, and she has even dressed like a muscle man to promote this year’s ENStrong fundraising campaign. Despite retiring more than five years ago, Schertz can still be counted on to help a member out as she actively encourages the nurses in her chapter to apply for Foundation scholarships.

The Foundation will present the awards to Miller and Schertz at Emergency Nursing 2023, ENA’s annual education and networking conference, in San Diego this September.
