April 25-26 event features sessions on caring for LGBTQ community and disaster response

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (March 25, 2019) – Caring for the LGBTQ community in the emergency department and a panel discussion on the response to disasters in Washington state highlight the Emergency Nurses Association’s Spring Regional Symposium in Seattle on April 25-26.

Presented at the Grand Hyatt Seattle, the symposium is the latest in ENA’s series of educational and networking events focused on bringing high-quality ENA programming to members on the local level. Previous symposia held in Las Vegas and Orlando drew hundreds of emergency nurses eager to participate in regional learning opportunities.

The symposium’s first day features a panel discussion focused on the lessons learned in local emergency departments during regional disasters such as the deadly 2017 Amtrak derailment, a fatal Duck Boat crash in 2015 and the catastrophic Oso mudslide. A session on disaster preparedness is scheduled to follow the panel.

Addressing societal stigmas about the LGBTQ community, and how it impacts patient care in the emergency department, will be a focal point on the second day of educational offerings presented by local experts and industry leaders.

Symposium attendees have the opportunity to participate in Stop the Bleed training, as well as informative sessions on talking with children about the dangers of the internet and social media in the context of the human trafficking crisis. Emergency nurses can also enhance their clinical knowledge as speakers present important information on preventing patient falls in the emergency department, assessing the best vascular options for patients with urgent or emergent needs, and patient safety science basics.
