ENA-AAENP Statement on Supreme Court Decision
The Emergency Nurses Association and American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners released the following statement regarding today's Supreme Court ruling.
Through its decision today in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Supreme Court changed the landscape of health care for women shaped in large part for a half century by Roe v. Wade.
The Dobbs ruling now allows abortion laws to be determined at the state level, which will create a ripple effect across the health care continuum – including in the emergency department. The Emergency Nurses Association and the American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners recognize there is much to understand, and many questions to answer, about what emergency nurses will need to know and be prepared for should laws change in their respective states.
As those events unfold, ENA and AAENP’s unwavering focus is on what the high court’s decision means for emergency nurses and their patients. ENA and AAENP will ensure emergency nurses and advanced practice registered nurses have access to clinical resources and education that prepares them for acute obstetric cases, while remaining committed to the delivery of high-quality care to every patient who visits the emergency department.
