Former ENA President Inducted into ANA Hall of Fame

Anne Manton joins exclusive group recognized for lifetime contributions to nursing
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (June 28, 2022) – Dedicated. Motivated. Legacy. Those are a few words you could use to describe Anne Manton, PhD, RN, FAEN, FAAN, so it’s no surprise that she was chosen as one of only two inductees into the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame in 2022.
Manton was honored as a nurse who has made extraordinary impacts to the nursing profession through her contributions, service, steadfast leadership, exceptional mentorship, effective advocacy, and innovative efforts over a sustained period of time.
“I love the story of the turtle on top of a six-foot pole, it didn’t get there by itself, and neither did I,” says Manton. “I have a lot of good people behind me and wouldn’t be where I am today without them.” She credits her family, excellent nursing colleagues, and outstanding mentors for supporting and inspiring her endeavors.
Manton has been a long-time member of the Emergency Nurses Association, serving as ENA president in 1998. Over the years, she has participated on many ENA committees and advisory councils and served as the first president of the Board of Certification of Emergency Nursing.
She held the position as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Emergency Nursing from 2013 to 2018. During this time, she instituted many changes which made the Journal more useful to practicing emergency nurses and was a trailblazer in increasing the journal’s online presence.
In 2015, the American Nurses Association – Massachusetts awarded her the Living Legend in Massachusetts Nursing Award.
When asked what accomplishment stood out the most in her career, Manton said it was when she spearheaded bringing two existing organizations with similar goals together to form the Nursing Organizations Alliance. She noticed that many organizations belonged to both groups, including ENA, and thought that all nursing specialties would be better represented if the two existing organizations became one.
“Anne has become a name synonymous with passion and learning here at ENA” said ENA President Jenn Schmitz, MSN, EMT-P, CEN, CPEN, CNML, FNP-C, NE-BC. “She embodies what this award means with everything she does. ENA is proud to have one of our own inducted into the ANA Hall of Fame.”
