The World Health Organization on Aug. 14 declared the spread of mpox throughout parts of Africa to be a global emergency. The disease, which is caused by a virus in the same family as smallpox, leads to painful scarring rashes. People with mpox can also experience fever, muscle aches, headaches and respiratory problems. Cases have been confirmed in more than a dozen countries, and a new form of the virus is spreading. In 2022, the lat time the WHO declared mpox to be a global emergency, it had spread to more than 70 countries.
