Ellen "Ellie" H. Encapera, RN, CEN, serves on the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Board of Directors. ENA is the specialty nursing association serving the emergency nursing profession through research, publications, professional development, and emphasis on quality and patient safety.

Encapera retired in 2011 after 41 years as a full-time staff nurse in a variety of clinical settings including 21 years as day shift charge and part-time educator at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, California. Her leadership skills and nursing experience were acknowledged as Encapera was appointed to an array of leadership positions including Patient Care Coordinator, House Supervisor, Clinical Ladder and Unit Practice Council Chair. Her passion for the specialty of emergency nursing and desire for professional growth opportunities led her to join ENA in 1988. In the 1990s, Encapera was elected to serve as Secretary and President of the Orange Coast Chapter and Secretary of the California State Council, and appointed to chapter and state committees on conference planning, education, and membership. Encapera served as an ENA voting delegate annually from 1991-2010 and again in 2016. She has been involved in national committees since 1999. Encapera was elected to serve 5 years on the Nominations Committee from 2005-2010 including one year as Chair, ENA National Director from 2011-2015 and re-elected to serve an additional two-year term from 2017-2018.

During her tenure as national board liaison, Encapera served in an advisory capacity to a variety of national committees, developing practice resources for ENA members. Encapera co-authored several bylaw amendment proposals, a 2011 General Assembly resolution, and has written several articles for ENA Connection. As a member of the 2016 Position Statement Committee, Encapera authored two ENA position statements. Encapera chaired the Board Governance Policy Committee and board ad-hoc committee to review ENA’s mission and vision statements and develop value statements for the association.

Encapera was an active member of the California State Council serving as Secretary from 1996-1997 and Delegation Coordinator from 1998-2010. Encapera was the Chairperson and sole member of the California State Council Membership Committee from 1998 to 2010 and reports that membership doubled under her guidance. California was awarded two national achievement best practice awards for membership recruitment and retention. As a member of the California State Council Education Committee she contributed to the development and coordination of state educational conferences serving emergency nursing and related services. Since relocating to South Carolina, Encapera is active in her ENA state council currently serving a third term as South Carolina State Council Secretary.

Encapera received her diploma in nursing in 1969 from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and has maintained her CEN certification since 1984. She is licensed in several states and continues to stay current on healthcare and legislative issues impacting emergency nursing practice, and participates in lifelong learning educational opportunities.
