About the Academy of Emergency Nursing
The Academy of Emergency Nursing (AEN) honors emergency nurses who
have made enduring, substantial contributions to emergency nursing,
advance the profession of emergency nursing, including the healthcare
system in which emergency nursing is delivered, and provide visionary
leadership to ENA and AEN.
The Academy welcomes applications from
all emergency nurses who feel that they meet the qualifications for
Fellowship. Applicants are encouraged to work with an Academy Fellow to put
together a strong application reflective of professional
activities and accomplishments.
AEN Fellow Criteria
- Must be a current voting member of ENA and have been a voting ENA member for the three years prior to the time of FAEN application. All memberships will be verified.
- Demonstrate active involvement in the Emergency Nurses Association beyond holding membership in ENA.
- Demonstrate enduring and substantial contributions that had a significant impact on the advancement of the emergency nursing profession on the local, state, regional, national, and/or international level (e.g., education, practice, research, leadership, and/or public policy).
- Describe how you will contribute to the Academy of Emergency Nursing and the advancement of the emergency nursing profession. The potential contributions may be in one or more of the following areas: education, practice, research, leadership, and/or public policy.
AEN Fellow Application Process
- Applications are reviewed by the AEN Board of Directors and scored based on pre-determined criteria. Fellowship consideration is only based on the applicant’s application, CV, and letters of recommendation; no additional information is considered.
- Applicants will receive a confirmation email from AEN once the application has been successfully completed
- Two letters of recommendation are required along with a $100 application fee.
- Members of the ENA Board of Directors and ENA employees are ineligible for admission to the Academy and cannot write letters of recommendation
- Members of the AEN Board serving during the time of application review may not write letters of recommendation for Fellow candidates
- Failure to submit all the required materials by the application deadline disqualifies the applicant, and the partial submission will not be reviewed by the AEN Board. The applicant will be notified and the $100 application fee will not be processed.
- Applicants will be notified in the spring of the AEN Board’s decision. All decisions are final, and no explanation of decisions will be provided to applicants or sponsors.
The Academy is an elite organization, and Fellowship applications are expected to reflect this level of professionalism. Below are some tips for submitting a Fellow,
Honorary, or posthumous application. The following factors are
considered by the AEN Board during the application scoring process:
- Membership — Membership must be in good standing and sustained for a minimum of three consecutive years immediately prior to the application submission deadline. Even a one-month lapse is considered a break in ENA membership.
- Solid Track Record — Applicants must demonstrate:
- Substantial, significant contributions that advance the emergency nursing profession
- Clearly defined, valuable impacts on emergency nursing practice, education, research, leadership, and/or public policy that are lasting and enduring
- Broad sphere of influence
Rising stars may need to apply several times before being admitted. Don’t give up. Develop and strengthen your efforts to meet the criteria.
- Above and Beyond — Contributions to the profession exceed that of a job description or any private enterprise interests. Accomplishments of Fellows are not solely related to work requirements or to personal business ventures.
- Scope of Impact — The body of work contributed by Fellows has clearly defined, wide-reaching impact on the nursing profession, not just on individuals. Fellows are outstanding leaders, leaving behind them an enduring legacy of specific works that will continue to shape or guide the profession.
- Sustained Contributions — Fellows make sustained contributions to the emergency nursing profession. Make it clear how you have contributed, and how you will continue to contribute to the profession of emergency nursing.
- High-Level Involvement — Your involvement goes beyond traditional involvement in local chapters, state councils, attendance at ENA events, or service as a delegate. Fellows are expected to contribute at the national and/or international level, through ENA, other organizations, national committees, or government task forces.
- Published Work — Fellows publish substantial works in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. These may be research, clinical, leadership, or policy articles and go beyond cases studies, columns, interviews, and newsletter items.
- Certification in Emergency Nursing (CEN) — While certification in emergency nursing is not a requirement of Fellowship, BCEN certification in one or more disciplines demonstrates commitment to the specialty of professional emergency nursing and is one factor considered when evaluating applications.
- Writing — Applications should be free of typographical errors, misspellings, and poor grammar. Statements should be clear, organized, specific, well-written, and easy to follow. Be sure to proofread your application carefully.
- Curriculum Vitae —The CV is used to support the application and therefore needs to be specific, complete, and succinct. Provide important details such as dates and a brief description of professional activities. Don’t use vague terms such as "multiple committees 1979-2006” or “consultant.” Make the timeline and duration of events clear. List courses that are pertinent to obtaining a certification, specialty, or degree. Do not name every class attended or every lecture presented.
- Letters of Recommendation — Ask sponsors to describe how they know you, in what capacity, and for how long. Request that they elaborate on your accomplishments, enduring contributions, and potential for future contributions to the field, rather than your personality. Select sponsors who are familiar with you and your body of professional work. If requested by the applicant, the Fellow sponsor is encouraged to review the application and provide constructive comments in meeting Section 3: Personal Statements criteria.
- Deadline — Submit the application, letters of recommendation, and CV well before the deadline date. Materials arriving after the deadline due to problems with the submitter’s computer and/or internet provider will disqualify the applicant.
