Joan Somes, PhD, RN-BC, CEN, CPEN, FAEN, NREMT-P, is currently serving as Secretary/Treasurer on the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Board of Directors. ENA is the specialty nursing association serving the emergency nursing profession through research, publications, professional development, and emphasis on quality and patient safety. Somes’ term ends December 2016.
Somes is an EMS Education Specialist at Regions Hospital EMS in Oakdale, MN.
Somes joined ENA in 1976 and has been active at the national and local level. She has presented multiple lectures at ENA conferences. She has been a member of the Geriatric Committee since 2004 serving as Chairperson in 2004. Somes has been Co-editor of the geriatric column in the Journal of Emergency Nursing since 2010.
During the last 35+ years she has served recurrent positions on the Minnesota State Council and Greater Twin Cities Chapter and as a General Assembly delegate/alternate from Minnesota.
Somes earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, MN, in 1974, a Master of Science in nursing degree from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis/St. Paul, in 1989, and a Doctorate in Health Administration from Columbia Southern University, Orange Beach, AL, in 2002. She is a certified emergency nurse, a certified pediatric emergency nurse, and certified in gerontological nursing. In 2005, Somes was inducted as a Fellow in the Academy of Emergency Nursing.
