Ellen "Ellie" H. Encapera, RN, CEN, is currently serving as a member of the Emergency Nurses Association board of directors, the specialty nursing association serving the emergency nursing profession through research, publications, professional development, and emphasis on quality and patient safety. Encapera’s term ends in December 2015.
Encapera is retired after 41 years of clinical practice as a staff nurse, charge nurse and part-time educator from Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, California and Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, Pennsylvania.
During her tenure with ENA, Encapera has served on many national, state and local committees. On the national level, she was most recently a member of the Nominations Committee from 2005 to 2010 and served as chairperson from 2007 to 2008. Other committee service includes the State Council and Chapter Relations Work Group (2004), the International Task Force (2001) and the Membership Committee (1999-2000). She has been a General Assembly delegate yearly from 1999-2010 and a co-author of several bylaw and resolution amendment proposals. Encapera has authored several articles for ENA Connection.
At the state level, Encapera has been an active member of the California state council, serving as secretary from 1996-1997, and state Delegation Coordinator from 1998 to 2010. She served as chairperson and sole member of the California State Council Membership Committee from 1998 to 2010 and a member of the California State Education Committee from 1997-2010. The state of California was awarded two national achievement awards for best practices related to recruitment and retention. As a member of the California State Council Education Committee she has contributed to the development and coordination of state educational presentations serving emergency nursing and related services. Since relocating to South Carolina, Encapera is now active in her ENA state council and provides speaking engagements across the country,.
At the local level, Encapera served as secretary, president-elect and president of the Orange Coast Chapter over a ten year period. She also served as chairperson and sole member of the Orange Coast Chapter Membership Committee. As a member of the Orange Coast Chapter Education Committee she was instrumental in the preparation and coordination of educational conferences for emergency nurses.
Encapera received her diploma in nursing in 1969 from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and has been a certified emergency nurse since 1984. She continues to stay current on issues effecting emergency nursing /medicine practice and participates in life long learning educational opportunities.
