Kathleen E. Carlson, MSN, RN, CEN, FAEN, is currently serving as president-elect of the Emergency Nurses Association board of directors, the specialty nursing association serving the emergency nursing profession through research, publications, professional development, and emphasis on quality and patient safety. Carlson’s term ends in December 2015.
Carlson is a full time clinical nurse at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital in Virginia. Since her first ENA meeting in California in 1975, her participation in ENA activities at the chapter, state and national levels has remained the constant in her professional life. In 1981 a mentor introduced her to the Certified Emergency Nurse examination - a certification she still holds. She wrote for the CEN review columns of the Journal of Emergency Nursing for twelve years. Since 1987, she has been a Trauma Nursing Care Course instructor and course director. From 1989 to 1996 she served on the Connecticut ENA board of directors and as vice-president, president and past president.
Carlson’s support for ENA’s programs has been a key to her leadership with colleagues, both as a staff nurse and in her management roles. After moving to New York in 1997, she became active at both the chapter and state levels, as a member of the executive council of the Lower Hudson Valley Chapter (president in 2001) and the New York State ENA Conference Committee (chairperson-elect in 2000, chairperson in 2001). Her commitment to leadership continues, as she has joined the Virginia ENA, serving as a Tidewater Chapter state representative to the state council and a mentor to new officers. She has also been active on the national level, serving on several committees. Her selection as the recipient of the Judith C. Kelleher Award in 2008 and induction to the Academy of Emergency Nursing in 2009 demonstrate that her enduring and substantial contributions have been recognized at the national level and at the local level by her colleagues in three states.
Carlson received her nursing diploma from Stamford Hospital School of Nursing in Stamford, Connecticut. She received her Bachelor of Science degree and her Master of Science degree in nursing from Western Connecticut State University, Danbury, Connecticut.
