INJURY PREVENTION INSTITUTE
Become a SBIRT Champion Today
Everyday, more than 20,000 people enter emergency departments (EDs) in the U.S. for alcohol-related injuries and illness. As a leader for injury prevention, the ENA Injury Prevention Institute is currently developing a FREE Alcohol Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Toolkit that will be available to 5,000 U.S. hospitals beginning April 1, 2008.
The toolkits will include multiple components (e.g., role plays, video, PowerPoint™ presentation, algorithm, example of discharge instruction, fact sheet and more) to educate nurses about: What is SBIRT? Why should it be done? How and when it should be done. The overall purpose of the toolkit is to ease the implementation of SBIRT in the ED setting.
The IP Institute is currently looking for energetic, enthusiastic and positive ED nurses who will serve as SBIRT Champions within their institutions. The role of these champions will be to promote the implementation of SBIRT in the ED to ED managers/directors (administrators), staff nurses and ED physicians. If you know of individuals who are interested in becoming SBIRT Champions, please ask them to visit the ENA Web site at www.ena.org/ipinstitute/SBIRT/Benefits.asp and complete the SBIRT Champion profile form.
