This research study looks at psychosis, past suicide attempts, and the presence of a suicide plan in order to predict the decision to hospitalize suicidal persons seen in psychiatric emergency services.
"Do Mechanisms that Link Addiction Treatment Patients to Primary Care Influence Subsequent Utilization of Emergency and Hospital Care?"

This study was conducted to evaluate whether formal mechanisms linking patients to primary care physicians would reduce the patient’s use of the ED and hospital services after substance abuse treatment. The findings show that on-site delivery of primary care reduced the subsequent ED and hospital visits.

This study looks at the prevalence of medical disorders and their impact on length of hospital stay among psychiatric patients with comorbid substance use disorders.
"Resource Use of Elderly Emergency Department Patients with Alcohol-Related Diagnosis"
(2005) Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment
Compared to other admissions through the ED, alcohol related admissions were associated with longer lengths of stay but lower charges.
"Emergency Department Management of Suicidal Adolescents"
(2004) Annals of Emergency Medicine
This article is a review of the literature on the risk factors and epidemiology of suicidal adolescents in the emergency department. Recommendations for management are included.
