Faculty members from Louisiana handed out Mardi Gras beads after their concurrent session Sunday morning. One year from now, ENA will welcome attendees to Leadership Conference 2012 in New Orleans. Laissez les bons temps rouler!" (Cajun for "Let the good times roll!")
 Safe travels home!

Attendees nodded in recognition as Closing Session speaker Kathleen Bartholomew, MN, RN, related story after story of nurses who had been victimized by nurse-to-nurse hostility.
Rolled eyes, snickering, raised eyebrows, sarcasm, whispers of “She’ll never make a good nurse—she doesn’t have what it takes,” do more damage than people realize, Bartholomew said. Refusals to help a colleague in need, just to make a point, hurt more than the nurse who reached out; they put patient safety at risk. She shared a story of a nurse who had been on the floor for a year but had not mastered a certain procedure. |
| After two refusals of help from more experienced colleagues, the newer nurse completed the procedure incorrectly; the next day, the two colleagues who dismissed her pleas for help wrote her up.
“How is it possible, in a profession based on caring, that nurses ever experience uncaring behavior with their peers?” she asked
Many things perpetuate cultures of nurse-to-nurse hostility, but three most important are that everyone knows about it, nobody talks about it, and it’s not written down anywhere, said Bartholomew.
Her action plan for eliminating nurse-to-nurse hostility included adopting a zero-tolerance policy for that behavior.
“The most powerful thing you can do is go back to the person you work with the most and ask two questions: What do you like that I do well? and What would you like see more of?” she said.
I salute you, and I sincerely hope you to realize that your greatest strength will always be in each other,” she said.

What do you know about the qualifications, background and vision of the candidates running for 2012 officer and board member positions?
The Election Candidates Forum provided members an opportunity to hear from all candidates seeking these positions: two members for the office of president-elect, three for secretary/treasurer and five for board directors. They were introduced in the order previously selected at random that will be followed whenever the names of 2011 election candidates appear in all publications, online and in the official online ballot. Candidates provided an opening statement with their biographical information and qualifications, and then answered questions prepared by the Nominations Committee.
Here are some of the questions asked: How will you transition into the leader of the ENA board of directors and maintain and open relationship with the ENA members? Being responsible for the financial well-being of the organization is a tremendous responsibility; have you ever held the position of chapter or state treasurer? What makes you qualified to be the secretary/treasurer of this organization? What does Safe Practice, Safe Care mean to you and how would you work to promote this into every emergency department and urgent care setting across the nation? What strategy could you use to get young nurses involved [in ENA] and keep them involved?
Following the Candidates Election Forum, a reception took place so the board candidates as well as individuals running for openings on the Nominations Committee were able to meet informally with members. You’ll find candidate and voting information on the ENA Web site.

Well, it's Sunday already. I can't believe how fast the days have gone, but here we are at the end of Leadership Conference 2011.
We have had the opportunity to listen to some amazing speakers and network with friends and fellow emergency nurses. The best part has been the education that we have received. I feel once again Inspired by the Learning to go home and Lead other nurses in the future.
Thank you all for a great experience! Thanks to the sponsors, the planning committee, the ENA board, but for me the most important people to thank are all of you. Without your willingness to share your knowledge and experience the events would not be the same.
I'm looking forward to traveling to Tampa for the 2011 General Assembly.
Continue to Learn, Lead and Inspire and have safe travels home.
I met a new ENA member and first-time attendee from Oak Park, Illinois, Brian Bade, BSN, RN, from Rush Oak Park Hospital, at the candidates forum Saturday night.
I saw his first-time attendee and NEW MEMBER badge; he had asked to be introduced to more Illinois ENA members, because this was his first conference and he has learned so much and done so much networking he wants to get involved.
By the end of the night, he was attending the Illinois ENA State Conference meeting in April, coming to their next state council meeting and started to hear what happens during our General Assembly and how to apply to be a delegate. He has been a nurse fewer than two years and has possibly caught that fever---you know that ENA fever, we all experience it at our first introduction to ENA.
Welcome Brian to one of the greatest nursing organizations in the world, you will find in years to come it will take you to new heights and nothing is unachievable.
Cathy C. Fox, RN, CEN, CPEN, Virginia and Tidewater ENA member cfoxerrn@gmail.com
Members of the ENA board of directors and national office staff answered Leadership Conference attendees’ questions and heard their concerns at an open forum Saturday in Portland.

Topics included guest day passes for the 2012 Leadership Conference in New Orleans, a heads up about Mardi Gras activities the week of the conference, dissemination of ENA research, navigating the ENA Web site, help with injury prevention education and discussion of how ENA determines advocacy priorities.
“Tell us what you need,” urged President AnnMarie Papa, DNP, RN, CEN, NE-BC, FAEN, as she assured members that their concerns would be addressed by the board of directors at upcoming meetings. She welcomed suggestions from members at the open forum as a microphone made its way throughout the room. Attendees heard that ENA was working to bring research stretcherside and translating data into seamless practice implications. Editorial changes evidencing this effort will soon appear in the Journal of Emergency Nursing; a new learning management system will go live this summer to implement some of the new research plans. “We’re on the cusp of something exciting,” members were told.
Papa said that the board of directors is reviewing ENA’s strategic plan for the next three years. “We may be looking at things again to design strategic initiatives to give us the wiggle room to be responsive.”
ENA Executive Director David Westman, MBA, CPA, CAE, will meet with members in the Oregon Ballroom Lobby today from 7:30 – 7:55 a.m. Come on down and chat with David.

Is it that time already????? I cannot believe it is Sunday February 20, 2011, the last day of the conference. I am excited to see what the speakers/presenters have to tell us today.
Today is bittersweet. Sad the conference is drawing to a close but can't wait to get home to see my family!!! I have made new friends and gotten to know fairly new friends better. I have learned so much on how to be successful at leading. I look forward to seeing you all in Tampa and again next year in New Orleans. I pray that all of you arrive home safely to find your families safe as well.
I want to leave you with a quote that my VP of Emergency Services shares with us: "A boss says, 'Go'; a leader says, 'Let's go.'" Think about that. I do not ask my staff to do something that I wouldn't do. As one of the presenters said yesterday, he asked why a patient had not been brought back to a room when the room was empty; his staff replied they were waiting for housekeeping to clean the room. He went to the housekeeping cart, got a broom, dustpan and mop. He cleaned the room, then told the staff, “Now bring the patient back.” I can't tell you how many times I have been in the same situation and done the very same thing. Sometimes I have taken the nurse assigned to that dirty, empty room by the arm and said "Let's go," and we both have cleaned the room. Take care, and I will see you in Tampa.
Thank you ENA Foundation for all that you do and for choosing me for one of the Leadership Tapestry Scholarships. Thank you ENA.
Yet another day of great sessions, speakers and information! Robyn Benincasa is an outstanding woman. Makes me wonder if I could do some of the challenges that she has done.
Shelly Cohen and Melinda Stibal informed us how to make the transition from staff to leader. Staff are those who get the majority of the work done; a leader influences others to get the job done.
Michon Dohlman gave the audience pointers on how to empower your colleagues to become leaders; and for those who refuse, we learned how to get them motivated to learn and perform from Michael Frakes.
It was very nice to have the opportunity to meet the candidates who are seeking a position to lead ENA. Hhmmm who to vote for??
Had a marvelous time with my girlfriends from my state council last night. If you haven't been to the Portland City Grill, OMG you have got to visit. The food is superb and the view spectacular!!!! Excited to see what tomorrow holds.
