Terry M. Foster, RFN, MSN, CEN, CCRN, CCNS, a clinical nurse specialist for the ED and ICU at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood, Kentucky, is the recipient of the Emergency Nurses Association’s Judith C. Kelleher Award.
The award was presented at the Anita Dorr Memorial Lecture and Luncheon Wednesday at Annual Conference in Baltimore, Maryland. It recognizes a member who has consistently demonstrated excellence in emergency nursing and has made significant contributions to the profession.
Foster’s nomination came from Alaska, Tennessee and Virginia and included the following common threads: He promotes the professionalism of emergency nursing through the education that he conducts nationwide; he serves as a role model to others; he is viewed as an expert in the field of emergency nursing, and he lives the mission of ENA.
Starting at the ground up, Foster began his career as a night secretary, enrolled in nursing school and worked as a secretary. He completed his RN and has been a staff nurse, nursing supervisor, and critical care and emergency nurse educator.
“Terry Foster has been a member of ENA for more than a quarter of a century, and during that time, I’m almost sure that Terry has been a speaker at every single state in the United States. And, if you name the committee, he’s more than likely served on it. One of his goals is to see every emergency nurse become a member and reap the joys of ENA. Even on the worse days, Terry is able to find joy and humor in so many situations,” said 2009 ENA President William T. Briggs, RN, MSN, CEN, FAEN.

The gifts reflected a portion of Briggs’ address to the General Assembly in which he encouraged all emergency nurses to laugh more.
