Practical Application of 2007 ACS Guidelines: A Case-Based Review |
| Course Description: |
ACS continues to be a major source of morbidity and mortality in this country. Advances in medical therapy and new clinical data are constantly leading to updated guidelines and recommendations designed to improve patient outcomes. Emergency nurses work on the front lines of health care and are called upon to triage and manage these patients, so they must be well educated and follow guidelines appropriately. Bleeding risks should be minimized whenever possible, but not to the extent of undertreating patients. Hence, continuing education is needed to prepare and equip emergency nurses with the knowledge and confidence to utilize the most appropriate therapies when treating patients with STEMI and NSTEMI. |

Acute Coronary Syndromes: Recognizing Early Signs of Ischemia |
| Course Description: |
Clinical research consistently confirms the early detection of myocardial infarction is crucial in preserving viable myocardium. Occasionally the initial electrocardiogram may fail to show the typical diagnostic warnings leading to an erroneous diagnosis of “normal.” The overlooked MI can be avoided by recognizing the less-obvious signs of infarct, initiating continuous ST segment and the use of alternative leads when indicated.
This lecture begins with a brief review of the pathophysiology of acute coronary syndromes and the current AHA/ACC guidelines. Detailed discussion will outline subtle changes that may be seen during the earliest stages of infarction. Attendees will be provided with the principles of continuous ST segment monitoring as well as indications for using alternative leads for monitoring remote areas of the myocardium. Case studies will be included to facilitate critical thinking skills.
