Benefits of Certification for the Nurse
Certified emergency and flight nurses have provided us with what they feel are benefits to becoming "certified":
- Self-satisfaction - A basic element to all personalities is the need to feel good about one’s self. certified nurses tell us that one of the main reasons they became certified was for their own self-satisfaction.
- Pride - Transport nurses are required to have a vast array of knowledge. They need to be competent in obstetrics, oncology, geriatrics, pediatrics, gynecology, general medical, cardiology, etc. They must be as capable of delivering quality care to a non-emergent patient as to a critical patient. What fulfills the need to have a personal sense of knowing one's capabilities? Certification fulfills the need to confirm one’s knowledge and capabilities.
- Growth - Certification has assisted nurses when pursuing career advancement opportunities. Employers know that most certified nurses have some personal characteristics that are positive attributes to institutions, i.e., a high achiever.
- Employment - Every transport crew, emergency department and flight crew would like to hire a knowledgeable nurse to fill a position. With the CFRN®, CEN® or CTRN™ credential, the interviewing institution knows this and gives more consideration to the candidate.
- Financial rewards - One indication that certification is recognized by various institutions across the United States is through financial incentives. Some certified nurses tell us that they get an hourly differential with some making as much as $5.00 more per hour for being certified. Others tell us that they get a yearly bonus.
