Position Statement - Personal Perspectives and Strategies on How the Academy of Emergency Nursing Can Help Advance the Profession of Emergency Nursing
Induction into the Academy as a Fellow was a major milestone in my nursing career. It seemed to be a validation of my years of involvement in emergency nursing and the Association. Attending the annual inductions the past two years has reminded me that I agreed to continue this commitment and make a sustaining contribution to the organization. As a Fellow, my responsibilities include mentoring others who wish to be inducted into the Academy as well as grooming the rising stars of our organization and leading them toward this goal. As a Director, my role would be to continue to develop strategic ideas and action plans to present to the members of the Academy. These include strategies to increase our visibility in the Association, create a network of experts and mentors to guide other emergency nurses in practice, and develop relationships with other professionals in healthcare and the greater community. I believe I am well positioned to achieve these goals. I have been a member of ENA for 30 years. I am well known to many members of the organization and have worked in various roles at a Chapter, State, and National level. I am certainly articulate and am generally very transparent when working within the organization. I am familiar with the staff at headquarters which can facilitate any work of the Academy. As a more mature member of the organization, I have been a role model and mentor for many emergency nurses and feel this is definitely an asset. I dialogue frequently with emergency nurses from all areas of the USA and have some understanding of the needs and concerns of these nurses. As a Director of the Academy, using this knowledge to develop networks and help members make connections with potential mentors would further the vision of our group. Finally, being a Fellow is an accomplishment that I cherish however, as I have said in the past, “We can’t sit back and rest on our ribbons.” I believe I need to take this a step further and participate as a Director in an effort to give back all that ENA and the Academy has given to me.
