ENA Foundation Carries on the Vision of Judith C. Kelleher

Des Plaines, Ill. – March 25, 2013 – The emergency nursing community lost an exceptional leader and visionary when ENA co-founder Judith C. Kelleher, MSN, RN, CEN, FAEN, passed away on Jan. 24. Judy’s contributions throughout her nursing career to the emergency nursing profession and to ENA raised the standards of how emergency nurses practice today.

In the early days of ENA, Judy was vocal in speaking up for emergency nursing, emergency nursing recognition and emergency nursing education.

To honor Judy’s wish to continue to further emergency nursing education and to keep her legacy alive, the ENA Foundation Management Board approved renaming its memorial endowment the Judith C. Kelleher Memorial Endowment immediately after her death. During Leadership Conference 2013 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the ENA Board of Directors approved a $75,000 donation from ENA to the ENA Foundation Judith C. Kelleher Memorial Endowment. In addition to the initial donation, the ENA board will match additional donations from states and individual members up to $25,000.

“The ENA Foundation is honored to name the memorial endowment after ENA’s co-founder Judith C. Kelleher. We sincerely thank ENA and the board of directors for their generous contribution to this endowment and for matching the incredible donations received from our fellow emergency nurses,” said Julie Jones, BS, RN, CEN, the 2013 ENA Foundation chairperson.

Once the Judith C. Kelleher Memorial Endowment reaches $100,000, the ENA Foundation will start giving the Judith C. Kelleher educational scholarship each year in perpetuity.

“The ENA Board of Directors recognized the significance of Judy’s contributions to the education and practice of emergency nursing,” said 2013 ENA President JoAnn Lazarus, MSN, RN, CEN. “We wanted to honor her and make sure that the ENA Foundation would be able to begin giving out a scholarship in Judy’s name this year. I think Judy is smiling down at us right now.”
