Position Statement
What attribute is essential to enhance ENA’s Mission of Safe Practice and Safe Care?

The attribute that is essential to Safe Practice and Safe Care is courage. It takes courage to lead; it takes courage to admit mistakes and find solutions; it takes courage to keep members foremost in our minds and never stray from the purpose of ensuring that all of ENA’s courses and all of our resources are the highest quality. It takes courage to speak up, in the boardroom at our national office, and hallways of regulators and legislators in state capitals and Washington DC, but that is how Safe Practice and Safe Care will be achieved.

As a staff nurse working 12-hour shifts in the emergency department, I could never have imagined that I would be asking you to trust me to serve as Secretary/Treasurer.

Like you, I continue to experience the frustrations of increasing numbers of patients, lengths of stay, crowding, regulations, and other pressures. I want to run for the position of Secretary/Treasurer because, after serving as state secretary, president-elect and president, and after three years on the national ENA board, I believe I could do the job. I will bring the perspective of a full time staff nurse who also has a Masters Degree in Nursing Administration, with a financial component.

My goal is for ENA to continue working for the safety of emergency nurses as well as patients. I’ve been the Nebraska ENA’s state Government Affairs chairperson for ten years and have advocated at the state house and Washington DC for increased funding of nurses and psychiatric services so our psychiatric patients do not languish in our emergency departments. I have been deeply involved in the issue of workplace violence, nationally and internationally.

Walking into legislators’ and regulators offices has given me the courage to speak up, ask difficult questions, help make difficult decisions, and to say what’s not easy or popular.

My goal is to make ENA the most relevant to the members we are here to serve. Membership will benefit because I would bring first hand current knowledge of emergency nursing to the table and work to keep ENA’s 30 committees, Institute Advisory Councils, and task forces strong and close to real emergency practice.

I am known at work as a person with integrity. I will work to bring the wisdom and honesty of emergency staff nurses, managers, educators, CNS’s, and NP’s to the boardroom of ENA and the offices of state and federal regulators and legislators. I will be your vigilant advocate for the wise use of our resources on the Finance Committee and Executive Committee, to ensure that ENA continues to be the best specialty nursing association in the world.
