Statement to the Membership My decision to run for the board of directors has been the result of many, many years of involvement in this organization at a local, state, and national level. Working in emergency care began before I became a nurse when I was an active member of our local volunteer first aid squad. I had long wanted to become a nurse and the pre-hospital experience as an EMT motivated me to pursue my RN. I have stayed in some aspect of active emergency practice throughout my career. As I pursued more education, I moved into education and management roles and have finally moved into academia as a full-time pursuit for the past ten years. This allows me to be involved in health care at all levels; education, research, and service. I am currently in an administrative position and an active faculty member in the nursing program. In this capacity, I have recently obtained government funding to implement an emergency nurse practitioner program, which is a longtime dream. I believe advanced practice nurses can provide efficient and cost-effective quality emergency care.
Although full-time faculty, I have not left clinical practice. I have been privileged to work in a community health center in an urban community as well as in the Fast Track area of our university hospital, which is a Level I Trauma Center. I remain an active lecturer on multiple emergency topics as well as the use of humor in practice, particularly as a stress reliever in the chaotic emergency care environment.
Finally, I have published on topics related to emergency care as well as pharmacology, leadership, and research. I believe I bring a wealth of experience to the role of director. I am aware of the practice issues that plague us in emergency nursing. I have worked in areas with major holding/overcrowding conditions as well as been the victim of patient violence in the practice site. These memories do not fade over time. I remain committed to providing a safe environment for nurses and patients as well as promoting the delivery of quality care. Back to top

Position Statement and Response The emergency nursing community continues to change with technology advances. How do you feel ENA should move forward in keeping up with social media (e.g., blogs, Facebook, etc.)? Technology brings great opportunities to stay connected and informed about emergency nursing as well as our professional organization. Never before have we had the ability to reach so many of our members about organizational, practice, and legislative issues. Exploring and implementing these communication options is vital to help us attract all emergency nurses into the organization. However, we must remain aware of the diversity of our membership and the ability of all members to utilize the latest technology. Providing a variety of communication techniques will help to keep everyone informed. Utilizing technology to promote potential candidates would allow all members to become knowledgeable voters.
