Statement to the Membership
I have been an emergency nurse and an active ENA member since 1984. I was originally a pre-med student and started volunteering in an ED in Baltimore during my junior year. I fell in love with emergency nursing during that year and decided then and there to follow that love. I changed my major, finished undergraduate school and went to graduate school to obtain my nursing degree and certification as a nurse practitioner. I have never looked back – this was one of the best decisions of my life.

I have been active in ENA at all levels. I have served as a chapter president and treasurer for the Southern Jersey chapter. I was NJ state president in 1992 and served as treasurer in 1996 and 1997. I was very active with the NJ State Emergency Care Conference from 1989 to 2003, serving as chairperson for several years. I am currently the finance chair for the New Jersey State Council. On a national level, I have served on the Elections Task Force, the Leadership Challenge Committee, the Annual Meeting Committee and the Resolutions Committee, serving as chairperson for two years. I am currently a reviewer for the Journal of Emergency Nursing.

Three years ago, I founded Blue Jay Consulting, a firm that specializes in improving ED operations. In this role, I have had the opportunity to work with over 30 emergency departments - community, tertiary and academic EDs, with visits ranging from 10,000 to 120,000. Many have the same issues – crowding, staffing and throughput. But all have dedicated nursing staff, often struggling to provide safe care for patients in an increasingly difficult environment. I have worked with those nurses to effect change and improve patient care.

As a member of the Board of Directors, I will dedicate my time and energy to assist the organization and our members to make impactful and meaningful changes to improve the environment, ensuring that emergency nurses have the resources they need to provide the care that our patients require.

I am passionate about the opportunity to make a meaningful difference for our profession, my emergency colleagues and the patients we treat.

Position Statement and Response
The emergency nursing community continues to change with technology advances. How do you feel ENA should move forward in keeping up with social media (e.g., blogs, Facebook, etc.)?
I believe it is vital for ENA to keep up with technology, especially the use of social media as a communications device. We must use all available sources as we continue to grow our membership and demonstrate the value-added services that ENA can provide. Just like ED nurses are required to respond to a changing environment, ENA needs to respond quickly to the rapidly changing practice of emergency care. Using social media, like blogs, Facebook and Twitter, allows ENA to communicate needed information instantaneously and allows members to respond in kind. We must remain current to remain a vital organization to our professional colleagues.
