Joan Somes, PhD, MSN, RN, CEN, CPEN, FAEN, is currently serving as a member of the Emergency Nurses Association board of directors, the specialty nursing association serving the emergency nursing profession through research, publications, professional development, and emphasis on quality and patient safety. Somes' term ends in December 2015.
Somes is a staff nurse-department educator at St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Somes joined ENA in 1976 and has been active at the national and local level. She has presented multiple lectures at the Annual and Leadership Conferences. She was a member of the Geriatric Committee from 2004 to present, serving as chariperson in 2004. Somes has been co-editor of the geriatric column in the Journal of Emergency Nursing since 2010.
During the last 35+ years she has served on recurrent positions on the Minnesota State Council and Greater Twin Cities Chapter and a delegate/alternate General Assembly delegate from Minnesota.
Somes earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nusring from the College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1974, a Master of Sceince in nursing dgreee from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis/St. Paul, in 1989, and a doctorate in Health Administration from Columbia Southern University, Orange Beach, Alabama, in 2002. She is a certified emergency nurse and a certifiied pediatric nurse. In 2005, Somes was inducted as a Fellow in the Academy of Emergency Nursing.
