JoAnn Lazarus, MSN, RN, CEN, is currently serving as president of the Emergency Nurses Association board of directors, the specialty nursing association serving the emergency nursing profession through research, publications, professional development, and emphasis on quality and patient safety. Lazarus’ term ends in December 2013.
Lazarus has been an emergency nurse for more than 30 years, working as a staff nurse, flight nurse, clinical educator, pre-hospital educator, director, and consultant. She is the vice president of operations, emergency services, for Blue Jay Consulting, working with emergency departments to improve operational effectiveness.
Lazarus has been active in ENA for more than 30 years. At the national level she served as the secretary/treasurer on the ENA board of directors in 2007, as a director from 2002 to 2003, 2006, and most recently from 2009 to 2011. She served as a trustee on the ENA Foundation board of trustees from 2002 to 2004, and as ENA Foundation secretary in 2005. She has served on several committees including the Leadership Conference as the chairperson in 1998 and 1999. At the state level she has served as president for both the Louisiana and Texas state councils.
Lazarus received her associate degree in nursing from Louisiana State University in Alexandria, Louisiana in 1973. She received her Bachelor of Science in nursing in 1990 from Northwestern State University in Shreveport, Louisiana, where she was also inducted in Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. In 1997, she received her Master’s of Science in nursing administration from Northwestern State University in Shreveport, Louisiana. She has been a certified emergency nurse since 1980.
