Deena BrecherDeena Brecher, MSN, RN, APN, ACNS-BC, CEN, CPEN, is currently serving as president of the Emergency Nurses Association board of directors, the specialty nursing association serving the emergency nursing profession through research, publications, professional development, and emphasis on quality and patient safety. Brecher’s term ends in December 2014.

 

Brecher has been a clinical nurse specialist in the emergency department at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for the more than seven years. In this role she has worked to advance nursing processes through the use of evidence based practice and also by applying the scope and standards of emergency nursing. An ENA member since she became a nurse, Brecher has always understood that emergency nursing is where she belongs. She is committed to pediatric emergency nursing, recognizing it is a subspecialty of emergency nursing with a unique skill set. She advocated for a certification exam which validated this skill set and was integral to the development of the Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse exam. She served on the Board for Certification in Emergency Nursing pediatric expert panel from 2006 to 2008, and was a BCEN item writer and a member of the Exam Construction and Review Committee from 2008 to 2010. Due to Brecher’s leadership in the emergency department, the importance of achieving a nationally recognized certification specific to pediatric emergency nursing has been enculturated. Brecher is affiliate faculty for both the Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course and Trauma Nursing Core Course. Brecher is also a certified TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer with experience in in-situ coaching.

As a result of her years in pediatric emergency nursing and her commitment to advancing the practice of nursing, several honors and special recognition have come Brecher’s way. In 2008 she received the Nemours Image of Nursing Award. In 2004 she received the Micromedix/ENAF Best Nursing Abstract Award for her abstract titled “The Reliability and Validity of the Emergency Severity Index in the Pediatric Population.” At the 2009 ENA Annual Conference, she was part of the Delaware Emergency Nurses Association Education Committee which received the National Team Award for its work educating emergency nurses in Delaware and surrounding states.

Brecher graduated from the Center for Emergency Medicine in Western Pennsylvania in 1994 with a certificate in prehospital emergency medicine; in 1997 she earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Pittsburgh. In 2004 she earned her Master of Science from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston as an emergency care clinical nurse specialist.
